Getting Started

What to Expect at Your First InBody Scan Appointment

Your first InBody scan appointment is short and low pressure: you arrive, answer a few questions, step on the machine for about a minute, receive a printout, and then spend around ten minutes with a coach reading it together. Nothing hurts, you stay dressed, and you leave with a baseline instead of a grade. A free consultation at FlexWerk’s Carmel City Center location includes the scan, and the walk-through below tells you what happens at each stage.

Before you arrive

Preparation is light, but it changes how fair the baseline is. Follow this short list:

  1. Eat and drink the way you normally would, with no unusual cleanse and no big drink just before.
  2. Skip training that day until after the scan.
  3. Wear light clothing with no metal and expect to take off shoes and socks.
  4. Avoid the scan if you have a pacemaker or similar implant, or if you are pregnant, without first asking your clinician.
  5. Try to come at a time of day you could repeat in four to six weeks.

The detailed version, with the reasons behind each rule, is the preparation checklist. If you could not follow every step, tell the coach; a note written on the printout is enough.

Stage one: arrival and a few questions

The FlexWerk building is at Carmel City Center, a short walk from the Monon Greenway, and garage parking is nearby. A host or coach welcomes you, asks about your goals and anything you want to keep an eye on, and checks the screening questions: devices, pregnancy, recent illness. Your height, age and sex are entered, since the machine uses them in its equations. This part is conversational, not a form to fill under pressure.

Stage two: the 60 second scan

You take off shoes and socks, step onto the footplates, and take hold of the handles with your arms slightly away from your body. Then you stand still for about a minute. The machine sends a tiny current you cannot feel, and a screen counts through the stages. If you want to know what is happening during that minute, how an InBody scan works explains it step by step.

Stage three: the printout

Seconds later a sheet prints. At first glance it is dense, so most coaches point out only a few items:

  • Skeletal muscle mass. The engine of strength and metabolism.
  • Body fat mass and percentage. The summary of where you start.
  • Visceral fat level. A cue about fat stored around the organs, read as a level rather than a diagnosis.
  • Segmental values. Whether arms, legs and trunk are balanced.
  • The InBody Score. A summary of muscle and fat balance around a reference of 80.

Stage four: the ten minute read-through

This is where the appointment earns its keep. A coach sits with you and answers three questions: where you are today, what the largest opportunity is, and what the next four to six weeks should look like. Expect plain language. A coach does not diagnose, does not promise outcomes and does not compare you with other people. For deeper reading of every line, the pillar guide to InBody results goes through the whole sheet.

A typical conversation sounds like this: “Your muscle is a little under the reference for your frame, so strength work is the first lever. Your fat mass is where we would expect, so we do not need a hard diet. Let’s rescan in about five weeks, same time of day.”

Reading the first printout without spiraling

Most people look for one number to judge themselves by, and the first sheet is a poor judge. Use three rules to stay level:

  1. Compare to yourself later, not to anyone now. Reference ranges are guideposts, and a baseline below a reference line is simply where the work starts.
  2. Pick one or two lines. Skeletal muscle mass and body fat mass are enough for the first month. The rest can wait.
  3. Hold the first fat percentage loosely. One reading can be off by a few points depending on water, so the second scan is the one that tells you whether your plan works.

If any number worries you in a medical way, such as unusual swelling or a symptom, mention it to your physician rather than reading too much into the sheet.

What the scan will not tell you

It will not tell you how strong you are, how fit your heart is, how you sleep, or what you should eat tonight. It also does not measure bone density, hormones or blood markers. That is why a good first appointment pairs the scan with a conversation about habits, schedule and goals, and why the first session afterward looks at how you move.

Questions people ask at the machine

People commonly ask whether to hold their breath (no, breathe normally), whether to stand rigidly (no, just still and relaxed) and whether glasses or a ring matter (a ring can stay on if you are comfortable, though many coaches prefer removing heavy jewelry). Ask anything else; the coach would rather answer than have you guess.

What you take home

You leave with the printout, a short plan and a date for the rescan. Photograph the sheet so you can compare it with the next one, and note the hour and what you ate. If part of the visit raised questions about your health, take them to your physician rather than to the scanner.

What happens next

If you want to act on the numbers, the usual route is a first training session, which is free at FlexWerk, followed by a phased plan that starts with habits and a baseline before pushing strength. If your numbers show low muscle with a higher fat share, this explanation of low muscle and high fat outlines what usually helps, and body recomposition describes the slower route of building muscle while fat comes down.

The one thing to remember

The first scan is a starting line. Its job is to give the second scan something to be compared with. Go in relaxed, keep your routine easy to repeat, and ask any question that comes to mind. Then book the rescan before you leave, so the baseline gets used.

Related questions

Do I need to undress for an InBody scan?

No. You wear light, comfortable clothing, take off shoes and socks, and remove anything metal such as a watch or heavy jewelry. The test works through the soles of your feet and the palms of your hands.

How long does the whole appointment take?

Plan on roughly twenty to thirty minutes in total. The scan is about a minute, and most of the visit is the conversation about what your printout means and what you want to change.

What if I am nervous about seeing the numbers?

That is common, and a good coach will start with what is going well. You control how much detail you want, and you can ask to focus on one or two lines for the first visit.
