Questions to Ask a Trainer When You're on a GLP-1

The best questions to ask a trainer when you’re on a GLP-1 medication test whether they know their lane: your prescriber owns the medication, and the trainer owns strength, muscle protection and session design. Indiana does not license personal trainers, so the interview is your main filter. The ten questions below come with what a good answer sounds like. They also work as a checklist for the first call at a GLP-1 coaching program of any kind, and for the broader interview process see how to interview any trainer.

Scope and safety

  1. “What do you consider your job, and what belongs to my prescriber?” A good answer separates exercise from medication, and never offers dosing, diagnosis or stopping advice.
  2. “How do you want to communicate with my prescriber?” Look for willingness to follow written limits and to share only what you consent to share.
  3. “What do you do if I feel dizzy, nauseated or faint mid-session?” Expect a calm, specific stop rule, not a push-through attitude.

Muscle and programming

  1. “How do you protect muscle while my weight drops?” The core answer is progressive resistance training two or three times a week, supported by protein habits.
  2. “What does a normal week of training look like for someone like me?” Strength first, easy walking, cardio held back, with rest built in.
  3. “How do you adjust when my energy or appetite is low?” Listen for a shortened session menu, not a canceled one, and not an insistence on the full plan.

Food and measurement

  1. “What will you say about food, and what will you leave to others?” Good coaches discuss habits such as protein first, and refer detailed plans to a dietitian or prescriber.
  2. “How will we know it is working?” Strength logs, tape, photos and a body composition scan, not scale weight alone. The free consultation here includes an InBody scan as a baseline.
  3. “How do you read a body scan?” A careful answer treats numbers as trends and coaching references, and never as diagnoses. The muscle retention guide describes this approach.

Fit and honesty

  1. “What have you seen go wrong, and what would you not promise me?” The right answer includes humility: no promised results, no timelines, no miracle claims.

Red flags in the answers

  • Telling you to skip, change or time your medication.
  • Prescribing a very low calorie plan.
  • Promising a specific loss or a look by a date.
  • Dismissing your prescriber’s guidance.
  • Pushing hard cardio as the main plan.

Green flags

  • Asking for your prescriber’s limits at the start.
  • Describing a muscle-first plan with flexible sessions.
  • Offering a clear stop rule for symptoms.
  • Being open about what they do not know.

Ask about the room too

Where you train matters on difficult days. A private suite lets you sit down, step out or end a set without an audience. Each coach at FlexWerk Carmel sets their own terms, so ask the same ten questions of every coach you consider.

Bring this list to the consultation

Print the list or keep it on your phone. The free consultation gives you the chance to ask all ten before committing to anything, and you can compare answers to the losing strength guide if you want a sense of what a coach should already know.

Related questions

Should I tell a trainer I am on a GLP-1?

Yes. A coach who knows can time sessions around energy and appetite, scale workouts on low days and keep your prescriber in the loop with your consent.

Do trainers need a special certification for this?

There is no single credential, and Indiana does not license personal trainers. Ask about experience with clients on medication-assisted weight loss and how they work within their scope.

What if the trainer wants to change my diet?

A trainer can discuss habits, but detailed meal plans and any change related to your medication belong to your prescriber or a registered dietitian.
