Workout Schedule for a 60 Hour Work Week

On a 60 hour work week, the workable schedule is two or three fixed strength sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, one or two short walks and one fully protected rest day, all placed on the calendar as appointments rather than hopes. A bigger plan fails because the hours are not there. For a coach to build your exact version, start with a free consultation.

Start with the real week

Write out the 168 hours. Sixty go to work, around fifty to sleep if you protect it, and roughly seven for commuting. That leaves about fifty hours for everything else, and the true free blocks are small and scattered. Your plan must fit those blocks.

The minimum effective week

Day Session Length
Monday or Tuesday Full-body strength 45 to 60 minutes
Wednesday or Thursday Full-body strength or a coached session 45 to 60 minutes
Saturday Optional third strength or a long walk 30 to 60 minutes
Daily Short walk, a few minutes after a meal 5 to 10 minutes
One day Full rest 0

Strength training does the heaviest lifting for health and body composition in the least time. Two sessions that cover squat, hinge, push, pull and carry patterns are enough to maintain and build, as the page on whether twice a week is enough explains.

Fix the slots first

  1. Choose the days your calendar is most predictable. Usually early in the week.
  2. Choose a time of day you rarely lose. An early slot or a fixed evening hour.
  3. Block the calendar with the same status as a client meeting.
  4. Book a coach or a partner if you can. Another person expecting you makes the slot harder to cancel.
  5. Decide the fallback for a day the slot collapses: a 20 minute version, not a skip.

What to cut when the week gets worse

Cut in this order: extra cardio, long warm-ups, accessory exercises, session length, then session count. Do not cut your sleep. Under heavy workloads, many people reach for extra training and lose sleep, which backfires. A reduced plan that happens beats a full plan that does not.

Where to train

On a long week, location is a big part of the plan. A gym on the commute or near the office saves the most time. FlexWerk in Carmel City Center runs 5 AM to 9 PM on weekdays and 7 AM to 4 PM on weekends, and each coach sets their own terms, so a coached session can sit at either end of a long day. See evening personal training in Carmel for details.

Handle the crunch weeks

Some weeks cannot hold even the minimum. For those, use the plan in workout plan for busy season at work: a maintenance version built for tax season or quarter end. For more on the minimum dose, read personal training for busy professionals.

Fuel and recovery on a long week

Long weeks tempt people to skip meals and run on caffeine, which makes both training and sleep worse. Keep two simple rules: eat a protein-containing meal within a couple of hours after each session, and keep water within reach during the workday. If you have a medical condition or take medication, ask your physician what is appropriate before changing how you eat or train. Small, repeatable habits are easier to hold at 60 hours than a perfect plan.

The weekly check

Every Sunday, look at the coming week. Mark the two sessions, move them if a client dinner or a deadline lands on them, and keep the total at two. Over a year, steady and boring beats ambitious and broken.

Related questions

How many days should I train on a 60 hour week?

Two or three is realistic for most people. Federal activity guidelines for adults suggest strength work on two days, and a short, consistent plan beats an ambitious one you abandon.

Should I train when I am exhausted?

Go lighter, not skip. An easy session or a walk keeps the habit while respecting recovery. If you are regularly exhausted, talk to your physician.

What is the best time on a long week?

The one that you can protect. For some it is early, before the day grows; for others it is a fixed weekend slot. Pick the slot that your week rarely invades.
