Personal Training Auto Renewal: How to Stop Unwanted Charges
Personal training auto renewal means your agreement keeps running into a new term, and keeps charging you, unless you tell the business in time and in the way the contract requires. Most surprise charges come from a missed notice date, not from a business breaking a rule. The fix is to find the renewal clause on day one, calendar the deadline, and know how to push back if a charge lands anyway. If you are still choosing a coach, a free consultation is the cheap moment to ask how renewal works.
How to spot renewal terms before you sign
Renewal language hides in three places, and you should check all of them:
- The term section. Look for an initial term followed by “automatically renews”, “continues on a month to month basis” or “successive terms”.
- The payment authorization. Card forms sometimes say the business may keep charging until you cancel, even when the main agreement says otherwise.
- Any attached policy page. Notice requirements, such as a written request 30 days before renewal, often live in a separate policy.
Ask the question out loud as well: “If I do nothing at the end, what happens, and by what date do I have to tell you?” Then ask for that answer in writing.
The notice deadline is the real end date
Many buyers calendar the day the package ends. That is a day too late. If notice is due 30 days before the term ends, the only date that protects you is the one 30 days earlier. Put two entries in your calendar: the deadline itself, and a reminder two weeks before it. For a standard monthly cycle, ask whether you can cancel mid month and stop at the next billing date.
What the rule says
Indiana’s Health Spa Services chapter, IC 24-5-7, caps a covered contract at three years and does not permit lifetime contracts, and the Indiana Attorney General’s consumer fact sheet on health and fitness clubs notes that an automatic renewal provision extends the contract unless you give notice. Source checked October 2026. This is general information, not legal or tax advice, and rules change, so your signed wording controls the details.
Turning it off, step by step
- Find the notice clause and note the method (email, mail, form) and the address.
- Send written notice at least a week before the deadline, saying you do not want the agreement to renew and asking for written confirmation of the end date.
- Keep the confirmation. If none arrives within a few business days, send the notice again by a second method.
- Only after confirmation, change the payment method on file if you want to.
Notice wording is covered in the guide to what a cancellation letter should say. For a second view of the whole exit process, see how to get out of a personal training contract.
Disputing a renewal you did not agree to
Work from the least to the most formal option:
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Write to the business, quote the contract section, and ask for the clause that allowed the charge. |
| 2 | If the clause is missing, unclear or buried, ask for a refund of the renewal charge. |
| 3 | Ask your card issuer about a dispute, attaching your notice and the contract. |
| 4 | File with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-382-5516. |
Be clear about the limits: a card dispute is easier when the renewal was never disclosed, and harder when your signature sits next to the renewal paragraph. If charges continue after you have cancelled, the steps for being charged after cancelling cover that case.
Renewal and the way you buy
Packages that run for a fixed number of sessions, paid per block, rarely renew at all, which is why how training packages are structured matters when you compare offers. At FlexWerk, suites rent by the hour with no membership or long commitment, so there is no renewal to forget, and any coach can walk you through their own terms in writing.
Related questions
How do I know if my training contract auto renews?
Look for words such as renews, continues, successive term, evergreen or month to month after the initial term. Also check the payment authorization, which sometimes contains the renewal language the main agreement leaves out.
Can I turn off auto renewal in the middle of a contract?
Usually you can give notice at any time before the notice deadline so it ends at the end of the current term. Do it in writing and ask for confirmation that the renewal is switched off.
Does stopping the card stop the contract?
Not by itself. Cancelling a card can leave an unpaid balance on the account, so give written notice first, then update or stop payment once the business confirms.
