Lean Body Mass vs Skeletal Muscle Mass: Which to Track

Lean body mass is everything in your body that is not fat (water, organs, bone, connective tissue and muscle), while skeletal muscle mass is only the muscle attached to your skeleton, and skeletal muscle is the one to track for training progress. The two sit on adjacent lines of an InBody sheet and get mixed up constantly. You can see both, with a coach explaining how they moved, during a free consultation in Carmel.

Lean mass is a bucket, skeletal muscle is one thing inside it

Think of your weight as three layers. Fat is one. Everything else is lean. Inside lean you will find:

  • body water, which is the largest piece by weight
  • organs such as liver, kidneys and heart
  • bone mineral and connective tissue
  • skeletal muscle, the tissue you train

Because water dominates, lean mass swings when hydration does. Skeletal muscle is estimated separately from the segmental readings of arms, legs and trunk, which is why it is the steadier line. The typical split is that skeletal muscle makes up roughly half of lean mass in a healthy adult, though the exact share varies by person.

What each number is good for

Question you are asking Better line
Is my lifting adding muscle? Skeletal muscle mass
Did I lose muscle on this diet? Skeletal muscle mass
Am I heavier because of fat or non-fat tissue? Lean body mass
Which side of my body is weaker? Segmental muscle values
Is my scan comparable to the last? Lean mass, as a hydration check

Lean mass earns its place as a sanity check. If it jumps a few pounds in a month with no change in training, your hydration or timing changed, and every other number from that scan inherits the same doubt.

A gain that looks bigger than it is

A new lifter often sees lean mass jump after a few weeks. Part of it is real, part is glycogen and the water stored with it, and part is simply a different time of day. Skeletal muscle usually rises more slowly and in smaller steps, because building tissue takes weeks of repeated training and enough protein and food to support it. When the lean line and the muscle line disagree, believe the muscle line and rescan under matched conditions.

The reverse happens in a diet. Lean mass can fall quickly because water and glycogen leave with the fat, which sounds alarming. Check skeletal muscle mass before concluding anything. If it held, the lean drop was mostly water.

Where to look next

For what counts as a healthy reading on the muscle line itself, see good skeletal muscle mass on an InBody. For uneven values across limbs, segmental lean analysis walks through the diagram, and normal muscle mass for adults frames the range by age.

A tracking habit that works

Write both numbers in the same row each scan and add a third column for the hour you scanned. Set your goal on skeletal muscle mass, use lean mass to flag unfair scans, and rescan every four to six weeks. Ask your coach which of the two moved first, and let that answer guide the next training block.

Related questions

Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass?

No. Lean body mass is the large bucket that holds muscle plus everything else that is not fat. Skeletal muscle mass is one compartment inside it, and it is the one that responds to lifting.

Why can lean mass go up while skeletal muscle mass goes down?

Because lean mass includes water. A salty meal or carbohydrate load can add water to the lean figure while muscle is flat or slightly lower, so the two lines separate.

Which number do bodybuilders and coaches watch?

Skeletal muscle mass, plus its distribution across arms, legs and trunk. Lean mass is used as a quick summary, but the muscle line is the one that tells a coach whether the program is working.
