How Much Muscle to Gain in 90 Days on an InBody

Most coached beginners can reasonably aim to add about 2 to 5 pounds of skeletal muscle mass in a first 90 days, while trained lifters should expect closer to 1 pound, and the InBody will usually read higher than the truth at the first rescan. Those are coaching rules of thumb, not promises, and your own number depends on four things: training history, sex, age and how much protein you actually eat. The sections below turn that range into a target you can set before you step on the scanner.

Pick your row before you pick a number

Your starting point matters more than your effort in the first quarter. Use the table as a planning range for skeletal muscle mass (SMM), the line on the sheet that excludes fat, water in fat tissue and organs.

Starting point Reasonable 90 day SMM change
Man, never trained 3 to 5 lb
Woman, never trained 1.5 to 3 lb
Returning after years away 2 to 4 lb, early gains come back faster
Lifting for 2 or more years 0.5 to 1.5 lb
Man or woman past 50, new to lifting 1 to 3 lb

These are commonly quoted coaching ranges, built from the general finding that novices add muscle quickly and the rate slows sharply with training age. They are not InBody data, and a single machine reading carries error on top of the real change.

What the scanner adds to the true number

An InBody estimates muscle from how a small current moves through your body, and water is the main thing that bends the result. A first month of hard training raises stored glycogen, and each gram of glycogen is stored with water. Soreness adds swelling. Both can push SMM up by a pound or two without any new muscle tissue.

That is why the first rescan tends to flatter you. Plan on the second and third scans being the trustworthy ones, and match the conditions each time: same time of day, same hydration, no workout beforehand.

How to turn the range into a plan

Use this short decision list to set your own target:

  1. Take the row above that fits you today, then use the lower half of the range if you sleep under seven hours or eat protein inconsistently.
  2. Add a stretch goal only if you can train three days a week for twelve straight weeks. Two missed weeks cost more than a bad week of food.
  3. Pair the muscle target with a strength target, such as adding load to three core lifts. If strength rises and SMM does not, the machine is the weaker witness.
  4. Decide in advance what result would change the plan, such as less than half a pound by day 60.

When the number is lower than the plan

A flat SMM line at day 90 is not automatically a stall. Dieting hard at the same time, a stretch of illness or a stalled lift pattern are the usual causes, and each has a different fix. If you cut calories sharply, the scan may show fat loss and held muscle, which for many people is the actual win. The skeletal muscle mass range page shows how the percentage bar and the pound figure relate, and the Refine phase guide covers what a coach changes at the end of a first quarter.

Where a scan fits at FlexWerk

At FlexWerk in Carmel, the free consultation includes a free InBody scan, so day one is a measured baseline rather than a guess. A coach can then set the SMM target with you from your row, and a day-90 rescan under matched conditions tells you whether to hold the plan or change it. Each coach sets their own session terms, and the consultation is where you hear them.

Book the free consultation with your goal in mind, and bring your sleep and eating pattern honestly so the target is built on what you will really do. Once you have a second scan, the recomposition progress guide shows how to read the pair together.

Related questions

Is a gain of one pound of skeletal muscle in 90 days a failure?

No. For someone who already lifts, or who is past 50, one pound over a quarter is a respectable result. The question is whether strength numbers rose alongside it and whether the line moved in the same direction on two scans in a row.

Why did my InBody show five pounds of new muscle in one month?

Most of that is likely fluid. Muscle holds water, a new program raises stored carbohydrate, and the machine reads the extra water as lean tissue. Treat the figure as a ceiling and wait for the next matched scan to see what stays.

Can I gain muscle and lose fat in the same 90 days?

Beginners, people returning after a layoff and anyone eating enough protein often can. The weight on the scale may barely move while the muscle line climbs and the fat line falls, which is why the scan matters more than the scale for this goal.
